Top 10 Trends for the 2014 Holiday Season

By 9:01 AM , , , , , , , , , ,

Happy December y'all!
To kick off the final (and eventful!) 31 days of 2014, I thought I would compile a list of what I anticipate to be the biggest trends of this holiday season.
10. Rose Gold
Rose gold is a trend that I love, love, love.  For a while it seemed to have been fading out of the spotlight (it became popular nearly 3 years ago with the rise of the oversized MK watches taking popularity, so it has been on the radar quite a while!), but I feel that it will remain a staple at least throughout the 2014 holiday season.  Dainty rings, chunky watches, or rose-hued stones will all be a hit throughout the Christmastime. 9. "Tacky" sweaters
Tacky sweater parties have been rising in popularity over the past few years, and with that, more boutiques have been stocking up on their selections.  Even with the word "tacky" right in the title, we all want to still look nice at parties and designers understand that!  Much more than in the past, they have been designing sweaters and long-sleeved tees with cute designs in the traditional "tacky sweater" style.  Lauren James is a great designer that makes cute tops that fit that description.  You won't need to borrow your grandmother's "tacky" sweater for the next Tacky Sweater party, you'll have your own cute one - that you wouldn't be embarrassed to wear out later, too!  Image from Lauren James website
8. Emphasis on cheeks & lips
This is going to be a new venture for me, personally.  A trend I see arising is something that we saw last year, as well - less emphasis on heavy eye makeup, more on a bright (or dramatic, as you will see at #6) lip and contoured cheekbones.  To achieve this look, you can opt for light (or even no) eyeshadow, and a matte foundation/powder - making sure that your cheeks and/or lips take full center stage.  It is important to remember that just because your eyes are not the star of the show, they should not be absent!  It is important to still make sure your eyebrows aren't neglected, and if you're an eyeliner gal like myself, it can still be applied without being too loud.  Image from Pinterest
7. Vests
Vests have been on the rise, especially in Autumn of this year.  Whether your style is a preppy traditional puffer vest, or a more bohemian fur (or faux-fur!) one, all styles are sure to be popular well into the New Year. Image is from Pinterest
6. Deep red lipstick
Like I mentioned previously, lips and cheeks are sure to be the stars of the holiday season's makeup looks.  Last year, we saw a lot of corals and even brighter purple-tinted hues, and while those will still be seen this year, I feel that more dark, wine shades are sure to be popular.  With stars on the runway like Lorde, Megan Fox, Halle Berry and even Reese Witherspoon all showcasing deep lip colors on the red carpet this year, its been shown that there is definitely a deep shade out there for any skin tone.  Don't be fooled though, a traditional RED lip is always still appropriate under the mistletoe! 5. Jewelry with large stones
One of the most popular styles to arise this year have been the large, sparkling stoned bracelets (upon other types of jewelry) that have shown up in many boutiques.  Some of the more popular designers are Catherine Popesco and Victoria Lynn, but there are also many other designers out there as well!  If you are not interested in the ~$100 price range, many stores also carry imitation brands that may not give the same sparkle, but will do the trick. 4. Blazers
The great thing about blazers in the last few years, is that they have transitioned from a button-up (literally) work trend to something that can be work day and night.  Of course, there are lighter and more casual styles made, but the great thing about the holidays is that there is more of an expectation to be formal than in other seasons.  Blazers can take a simple daytime outfit of a slouchy tee and skinny jeans to a perfect holiday party outfit; add the blazer, switch into some coordinating pumps, and throw on some chunky jewelry.  That's all it takes! 3. Oversize
There isn't that much to be said on the subject of oversized sweaters/tees/etc because this is NOT a new trend!  It is definitely not for the parties, but for the weekend and errand running attire, oversize sweaters are still a great hit this year.  Throw them on over some leggings and Uggs, and you can still be comfy while looking cute this year. 2.  Red skinny jeans
Read skinnies are a staple not only for the holiday season, but the Fall/Winter time as well - and when paired correctly, can even be worn throughout Spring and Summer as well!  And skinnies are great during the Winter months (because boots!) but red is particularly festive and can be paired with many other seasonal trends as well.  My advice is to pair with a black riding boot and nautically striped navy/white top, or with a fitted white tee and black blazer.  This is a look that can be worn to most jobs and still look great to go out to those holiday parties in later! Any shade from fire-engine to wine can work. Image from Pinterest.
1.  Sequins, rhinestones..  Anything with sparkle!
Last but of course not lease, we have a trend that has been a staple in at least the last few holiday seasons as well.  Anything glittery, sparkly, or shiny will be a great holiday go-to.  My advice for wearing glittery styles is to pair it with a solid; a sparkly sweater with a black skirt, or glittery heels with skinny jeans and a navy top.  Also, don't forget your nails!  Sally Hanson makes a great gold glitter shade in their Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips line that can be bought for $3.00 and up.  It can last over a week, and taking it off is WAY easier than trying to remove glitter nail polish!  You can buy it or read more about it by clicking here.
